A course day on gymnastics and lateral movements in hand usually begins with a short theory unit on biomechanics and the importance of shoulder-in, travers etc. for straightness and carrying power - in the sense of classical riding theory.
This is followed by practical work: First, the focus is on the lead position, position and bending in walk, then lateral movements such as shoulder-in or travers are worked on in hand. The aim is fine communication, active under-stepping of the hindquarters to promote suppleness of the fasciae, muscle development and mental suppleness in the horse.
