CHRISTMAS NIGHT MASS (1800)
O King of all the pious
Thauet Himmel den Gerechten
Praise God, all ye Christians alike
Alas another year gone
The Hallstattcomposer Johann Michael Schmalnauer (1771-1845) became a symbol of the special sound of the music of the Salzkammergut.
The triadic melodiousness and the erratic character of the melodies reflect the angular and mountainous landscape and convey the special character traits of the Salzkammergut people, who live in narrow valleys between the mountains and strive upwards into the light towards the alpine pastures and God's grace.
Schmalnauer's main occupation was as a salt master in Hallstatt and Bad Ischl and he gave his homeland the gift of "memorable" melodies, which are still sung by church choirs in the Salzkammergut today without their author being known. His Christnacht Mass is a masterpiece of exceptional quality!
Schmalnauer rightly deserves the title - MOZART of the SALZKAMMERGUT!
Experience the world premieres of his "Heavenly Music" after more than 200 years with the St. Florian Boys' Choir and the Ensemble for New Baroque Music Ars Antiqua Austria under the direction of Gunar Letzbor.
