After the death of his eldest daughter and the diagnosis of heart disease in the summer of 1907, Mahler's life took a decisive turn. Instead of retiring to a more sheltered life, Mahler resigned from his position as director of the Vienna Court Opera and accepted an offer to conduct at the Metropolitan Opera and later with the New York Philharmonic. Leaving for the New World with his wife and daughter to devote himself to another strenuous concert program and at the same time deal with a new language and a completely different artistic culture was a daring venture fraught with inevitable misunderstandings and misjudgments. Thomas Hampson and Joseph Horowitz, two experienced observers of both Mahler and the New York art scene, will shed light on this crucial chapter in Mahler's life and work.
