As a result of the Enlightenment, the sciences expanded the traditional Western concept of space and time into sheer infinity. The universe became older, bigger and colder. This is also associated with the experience of insecurity, of no longer being at the center of the universe, of no longer being anchored in a world view that is able to wrest its final meaning from history. The threat of an apocalypse has been replaced by a geological continuity of catastrophes and changes.

There is a dawning awareness of an uncanny, sublime indifference to human scale in a universe that is neither empty nor animate, but undead.
