Exclusive tour with the national park researcher
Natural streams have become rare nowadays - they are often obstructed, straightened or dammed. As a result, the streams have not only lost their natural dynamics, but many species that are tied to this habitat have also disappeared. They exist in the Kalkalpen National Park - over 200 kilometers of free-flowing, natural mountain streams. They are home to stone crayfish, native brown trout and other endangered species.
On this exciting tour, Christian Pichler-Scheder, aquatic ecologist at the Kalkalpen National Park, shows how the food webs in a mountain stream work and how the national park ensures that native species can develop undisturbed by foreign competitors.
