The Kalkalpen National Park is known for its original beech forests, which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These forests provide food and breeding grounds for a rich variety of birdlife. All six woodpecker species in the national park can be found here in the Reichraminger Hintergebirge, including the rare white-backed woodpecker. Songbirds such as the collared and lesser spotted flycatcher make use of the wide range of woodpecker cavities.
