Chanticleer
Known worldwide for its versatile repertoire and virtuosity, the Grammy-award winning vocal ensemble Chanticleer – under the direction of Music Director Tim Keeler – captivates audiences with extraordinary vocal precision, tonal purity, and stylistic expressiveness. The Boston Globe praised Chanticleer as "breathtaking in intonation, sound balance, richness of colors, and stylistic sovereignty." Founded in 1978 in San Francisco by singer and musicologist Louis Botto, Chanticleer quickly established itself as one of the world's most productive touring and recording ensembles. As an "orchestra of voices," the ensemble has performed thousands of live concerts and sold over a million recordings.
Chanticleer's roots are in Renaissance music, but its repertoire today also includes classical works, gospel, jazz, and popular music. A special highlight is the program A Chanticleer Christmas, with which the ensemble tours every December. In autumn 2025, the new Christmas album Joy to the World will be released. With a strong commitment to new compositions and arrangements, Chanticleer regularly places American repertoire and a distinctly American sound at the forefront – a reflection of the ensemble's stylistic and personnel diversity. Many of its numerous recordings document these commissioned works and have been awarded prestigious prizes – including two Grammy Awards for Sir John Tavener’s Lamentations & Praises and the collection Colors of Love. The album Our American Journey was added to the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress in 2025. Chanticleer has been awarded the Dale Warland Commission Award and the Chorus America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming. Joseph H. Jennings, long-time singer and music director of the ensemble, received the Brazeal Wayne Dennard Award for his outstanding work in the African American choral heritage.
Named after the "clear-singing" rooster from Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, Chanticleer was named Ensemble of the Year by Musical America in 2008 and inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame. The ensemble’s award-winning education programs – honored with the Chorus America Education Outreach Award – have reached tens of thousands of students since their inception.
Our American Journey
To celebrate the 250th anniversary of American independence, Chanticleer honors the diverse voices, melodies, harmonies, and rhythms of the shared musical heritage. The ensemble explores how these musical traditions have influenced each other and what significance and impact they hold to this day. The centerpiece of the program is a specially commissioned work by composer Trevor Weston, which highlights the connection between traditional American hymn music and African American spirituals.
The further repertoire traces the development of American choral music, from black gospel quartets and shape-note singing to barbershop quartets and vocal jazz. It is complemented by arrangements of traditional bluegrass melodies and popular folk songs such as "Calling My Children Home" and "Shenandoah," as well as arrangements of modern classics of American music such as "Somebody to Love" by Queen and "Home" from The Wiz.
"The applause after each song reached some tsunami waves [...]. For every single one of the twelve (one) jurors, vocally operates as a soloist and as part of an ensemble, like a part of a clockwork. The intonation is perfect, free of impurities, the dynamic range, the palette of emotional expression seems endless and varies anew in its nuances." — Die Rheinpfalz
"They can do everything, these "roosters" after which Chanticleer is named. But they do not crow like vain roosters, but are proud singing roosters with special vocal virtues: a cultivated and balanced overall sound, precise, unmatched in its homogeneity across all vocal ranges, transparent in leading the voices and extraordinary in gradations of dynamics." — Markgräfler Tagblatt
