Stefan Traxler (OÖLKG), Julia Klammer (Forum Donaulimes), and Gerald Grabherr (University of Innsbruck) report on the latest archaeological research into the settlement landscape between Lauriacum/Enns(Upper Austria) and Claudivium?/Stein near St. Pantaleon-Erla (Lower Austria).

Since 2015, this approximately 10-kilometer-long section of the Danube Limes has been the focus of the interdisciplinary research network CIRCUM LAURIACUM. At this military hotspot in the north of the Roman province of Noricum, nearly 500 years of Roman history can be studied in all its facets. Here lie the legionary base at Lauriacum/Enns (Upper Austria), an unfinished legionary camp in Albing, the fort and civilian settlement of Stein (both in the municipality of St. Pantaleon-Erla, Lower Austria), at least three smaller temporary camps in Obersebern (municipality of Naarn, Upper Austria), and several watchtowers. Close collaboration and ongoing exchange among the participating scholars are constantly yielding new insights and perspectives.

The themed evening will not only present the well-known and lesser-known military sites at this important transportation hub. The latest findings from excavations and, above all, from geophysical surveys will also be discussed. And the highlight will be a city that has fallen into oblivion …
