Inspired by a true story

DE 2025 | 104 min – Director: Christina Tournatzẽs Cast: Elise Krieps, Rainer Bock, Imogen Kogge Munich Film Festival: New German Cinema Awards: Best Director, Best Screenplay Winner of film festivals in Chemnitz and Thessaloniki – German version

A powerful film about moral courage, self-empowerment, and the right to be heard. 1962, Germany: Twelve-year-old Karla courageously stands up to a world in which children are expected to remain silent. She defies the power of her father, the silence of her family, and a society that prefers to look away rather than listen. But Karla does not remain silent—she speaks out, accuses, and in doing so changes more than she ever thought possible. Inspired by a true court case, KARLA tells the story of a young girl who finds the courage to stand up for herself – and in doing so gives others a voice. Elise Krieps touches viewers in her first role with quiet strength and unwavering presence. Rainer Bock and Imogen Kogge reinforce the impressive ensemble with great depth. The film approaches its subject with great sensitivity and artistry. The conversations with Judge Lamy (Rainer Bock) reflect the young girl's dilemma. Karla omits the details of her experiences, because if she found the words to describe her experiences with her abusive father, it would be like reliving the abuse. Lamy's initially gruff reserve quickly turns into warm affection. He points out the problem of a court case (“he said, she said”), but goes to the limits of professional ethics to defend the child's credibility and dignity. Epd-film.de
