St Nicholas rides with the GM 5 nostalgic art nouveau railcar

Experience the Christmas-decorated town of Gmunden on Lake Traunsee in a special way: Take a nostalgic ride on the historic Art Nouveau railcar GM 5 (built in 1911) and enjoy the festive atmosphere. St. Nicholas will be on board, handing out gifts* to the children and telling enchanting Christmas stories.

Route: From the Gmunden train station through the villa district, along the picturesque Esplanade, across Town Hall Square to the lake station and back—a unique experience on one of the steepest tram lines in the world.

Just hop on and ride along—no registration required!

Due to limited space on the vintage tram, we unfortunately cannot accommodate strollers. Please note that this tram is not wheelchair-accessible.

Here’s how to get to the St. Nicholas Ride on the Nostalgia Tram in Gmunden in the Traunsee-Almtal region:

We recommend traveling by public transportation!

By train: Take the train from Attnang-Puchheim Station to Gmunden Station. There are numerous connections from Attnang-Puchheim Station to the mainline trains on the Westbahn line (Line 101) or via Gmunden to the Salzkammergutbahn toward Bad Ischl, Hallstatt, and Bad Aussee.

The tram ride starts at Gmunden Station!

From Vorchdorf, take the Traunsee Tram (Line 161) from Stern & Hafferl to the Gmunden Bahnhof or Gmunden Seebahnhof stop. The St. Nicholas Ride also starts from there.

By bus: OÖVV bus lines, Gmunden Bahnhof stop

By car:
A1 West Autobahn: Vienna – take the A1 Laakirchen West exit – via Laakirchen to Gmunden – Gmunden Ost – Engelhof P&R facility, then continue with the Traunsee Tram
or to Gmunden Bahnhof station to the P&R parking lot
A1 West Autobahn: Munich – Salzburg – A1 Regau exit – to Gmunden – Gmunden Zentrum exit – Gmunden train station P&R parking lot or via Gmunden Ost to the P&R facility at Engelhof train station.

Parking options:
We recommend using the P&R facilities at Engelhof Station and continuing your journey on the Traunsee Tram to the Gmunden Bahnhof or Gmunden Seebahnhof stops
