In 1838, Franz Oberleitner vowed to build a nativity scene as a token of gratitude for the birth of his son. It was set up every year. In 1889, Johann Kalss purchased it and added movable figures. The nativity scene depicts the Nativity and scenes from the Christmas story. The figures in Salzkammergut traditional dress, along with scenes of work and craftsmanship, reflect regional life. Since the 1980s, it has been housed in the museum, where it is displayed every year during the Christmas season. The setting up and viewing of the landscape nativity scenes in the Salzkammergut have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2015.

In addition to the Kals Nativity Scene, box nativity scenes created by local nativity scene makers will also be exhibited at the Hotel Austria in 2025.
