Towards the end of the Second World War, a village schoolteacher lives with his large family in a mountain village in Trentino, Italy. He is deeply attached to the rural environment, but at the same time harbors intellectual ambitions. The war is particularly noticeable in the remote village due to the absence of the men who have been called up. One point of friction in the family is that the father is disappointed with his eldest son, who shows little interest in education. The youngest daughter, on the other hand, is encouraged by her father and is soon to go to secondary school. When a deserted nephew returns with a Sicilian comrade, the family is thrown into turmoil. The eldest daughter falls in love with the stranger, and the other children also seek their own paths in life. In clear, quietly observant images, this sensitive family portrait unfolds a microcosm that is primarily illuminated as a space of female experience. An impressive work about longings and secrets in a world full of prescribed structures. - Worth seeing from 14.
