The Magdalenaberg may have previously served as a place of worship. According to legend, St. Severin († 482) is said to have preached here. The first documented evidence dates back to 1423. The church was probably built in the Gothic style between 1398 and 1423. It is believed to be based on a foundation by the Lords of Pollheim, who acquired the castle and lordship of Tegernbach in 1398 and whose ancestral castle was near the present-day town of Pollham.
The Magdalenaberg Church belonged to the parish of Schönau and was thus under the Benedictine Monastery of Mondsee. In the 16th century, during the Reformation, Protestant preachers worked here.
From 1614 to 1621, the nave was architecturally altered by Pastor Andreas Wolff, and the organ loft was built. By order of Joseph II, the Magdalenaberg Church had to be sold in 1786. A farmer acquired the church, returned it to the parish of Schönau, and saved it from decay.
In the 1970s, during a comprehensive restoration, an interesting discovery was made: in the wall niches of the apse, women's braids - possible signs of penance - were found.
