Philipp von Steinaecker celebrates his Brucknerhaus debut with an extraordinary program based around Antonín Dvořák's famous cello concerto, played by Julia Hagen.
Bedřich Smetana's The Bartered Bride established the independence of Czech opera in the mid-19th century with its rousing, folkloristic, dance-influenced tonal language and realistic narrative. The furious overture, whose rhythmic interweaving and breathless art of figuration places the highest technical demands on the performers, is a kind of concentrate of this energy inherent in the work. The perfect opening for a concert dedicated entirely to Czech music: The impressive motivic work of composer Bohuslav Martinů can be experienced in his 4th Symphony, which also bears influences from his predecessor Antonín Dvořák. His concerto for cello and orchestra forms the crowning finale of this journey through the soundscapes of 19th and 20th century Czech music. The solo part will be performed by Austrian shooting star Julia Hagen.
