George Frideric Handel's oratorio Israel in Egypt with a brilliant cast of soloists, the ad libitum choir and the original Barucco sound orchestra under the direction of Heinz Ferlesch
Handel's Israel in EgyptGeorge Frideric Handel's Israel in Egypt is one of his most famous and at the same time most experimental works. While the composer dramatically set the individual fates of biblical figures to music in many of his oratorios, this time he impressively set the exodus of the people of Israel from Egypt to music: the result is an oratorio in which the choir sets the tone. Among the numerous numbers, there are only a handful of arias, duets and recitatives, which are performed by a top-class soloist ensemble. Handel uses musical means that were highly unusual for his time: The biblical plagues in particular are clothed by him in almost expressionist garments of sound, brought to life by the Ad Libitum choir and the original Barucco sound orchestra under the direction of Heinz Ferlesch.
