About the person:
Alois Walchshofer was born on May 27, 1925, the son of master blacksmith Alois Walchshofer. He was the youngest of 3 children and attended elementary school in Hirschbach. His teacher Franz Kinzl, later a professor, composer and painter, was his role model.
In 1939, he began an apprenticeship with his father and learned the blacksmith's trade. In 1951, he took over his father's business and married Hildegard Wurm.
Alois Walchshofer was closely associated with music throughout his life. He started playing the snare drum in the local band at the age of 11. During his apprenticeship, he also learned to play the accordion and flugelhorn. Even then, he provided music at various festivities in different formations or as a solo entertainer. At the end of the 1950s, Alois Walchshofer began to make music at home with his family. His wife Hildegard and their seven children were enthusiastic about it.
Under the motto "A musical journey through Austria", the "Musizierende Mühlviertler Familie Walchshofer" performed publicly at events from 1963 onwards and eventually completed around 800 performances in the Mühlviertel, Waldviertel, Salzkammergut and Bavaria. The musical highlight was the appearance on Heinz Conrads' television program 'Guten Abend am Samstag' in 1971.
Alois Walchshofer was an active musician in the Hirschbach local band for 40 years and in the Chemie-Linz band for 7 years. He was particularly proud of the Hirschbach youth band, which he founded and whose young members he led with enthusiasm and commitment for two years.
In the course of his life, he developed from a reproducing musician to a composer of marches for brass bands ("Gruß aus Hirschbach"), polkas ("Kleine Amona"...) and songs. The "Hirschbacher Lied" is an integral part of the local identity.
