Quatuor Ébène

The French Quatuor Ébène has belonged to the international premier league of string quartets for decades and has three masterpieces of this supreme musical discipline in its luggage: in addition to Joseph Haydn's String Quartet in G major op. 76 no. 1, named the 'Erdödy' Quartet after its patron, the program includes Maurice Ravel's String Quartet in F major, which is probably one of the composer's best-known works. The crowning finale is Johannes Brahms' String Quartet in A minor op. 51 No. 2, a work that combines lyrical lightness with intensive motivic work. Brahms found it so difficult to compose this quartet that he described the work as the "birth of pincers" and appropriately dedicated the work to his surgeon friend Theodor Billroth.
