It's winter 1933 in Berlin, and posters of a man with a Charlie Chaplin moustache and a grim look hang in the streets. Nine-year-old Anna and her brother Max don't care much. Anna wants to become famous, like her dad, the feisty Jewish writer and theater critic; Max makes the neighborhood unsafe with his gang.

But when Papa disappears overnight, Anna and Max have to flee abroad with their mother, leaving everything they know and love behind - even Anna's pink stuffed rabbit. A journey with an uncertain outcome and great challenges begins - but Anna's impractical, loving family will do their utmost to let it get them down.
