Behind Her, the Mountain —Anna grows up in the Austrian mountains—at a time when the world is falling apart. Little by little, the events of world history become palpable in village life: Annexation by the Third Reich, the creeping changes in people’s thoughts and actions, the approaching war—and the shadeless figures passing by the houses. And then there is Anna, seventy years later, at the end of her life, gradually withdrawing from the world. Yet she still hears those footsteps.
