From the novel "The discomfort"
The film centres on teacher Lorenz Urbach, who is highly committed to his German and history lessons. But he is gripped by a vague sense of unease when an activist pupil questions him: How could one show so little attitude in the face of growing global crises - such as the refugee movement, the wars and the deaths in the Mediterranean? Overwhelmed by the political situation, Lorenz begins to doubt his actions.
He sets off on a solitary hike in the Tyrolean Alps. There he confronts the forces of nature in search of the origins of violence. Thoughts of his childhood sweetheart, who deliberately withdrew from society, accompany him. At the same time, the story of a mysterious ‘monster’ makes the rounds. His narrative style changes as he moves into the harsh mountain world. The plot comes to a head and its symbolic content becomes clear. Thomas Arzt, born in Schlierbach, tackles a controversial topic as a playwright and author.
‘Das Unbehagen’ is a haunting contemporary novel. Following the reading, Rene Freund invites you to a popular discussion with the author. An opportunity to find out more about the genesis of the novel.
We look forward to welcoming you in large numbers
