Deep Space Experience: Bosch Immersive – Hieronymus Bosch’s Altarpiece of the Last Judgment

Hieronymus Bosch’s “The Last Judgment” triptych is one of the most prominent works in the Vienna Academy’s Picture Gallery and is part of Austria’s cultural heritage. 

His bizarre visual world, populated by devils and demons, offers insight into late-medieval thought and has lost none of its fascination to this day.

The religiously inspired iconography serves as a moral admonition and includes depictions of the Last Judgment with the canon of the Seven Deadly Sins, scenes from the story of Creation and Hell, as well as figures of saints as exemplary models of virtue.
The presentation guides visitors through the richly detailed visual world of the famous Dutch master. The gigapixel image, presented here for the first time, was created in collaboration between the Gemäldegalerie of the Academy of Fine Arts and Ars Electronica. The high resolution of the image file reveals the finest details of the 500-year-old painting, which are barely visible to the naked eye on the original.
