The Winter Journey
Franz Schubert's moving song cycle "The Winter Journey" in the arrangement for string quartet by Jens Josef. The adapted version closely follows the original while giving the composition new accents. The renowned tenor and prizewinner of the Bach, Schumann, and Mozart competitions, Daniel Johannsen, and the Sonare string quartet portray Schubert's emotional pain in new tonal colors.
Daniel Johannsen
“When it comes to transforming (German-language) texts into music, Daniel Johannsen currently represents the pinnacle of sensual meaning conveyance.” Thus reviews the Leipziger Volkszeitung his CD 360° Hugo Wolf. After his training as a church musician, the Austrian studied singing with Margit Klaushofer and Robert Holl in Vienna; he was a master student of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Nicolai Gedda and is a prizewinner of the Bach, Schumann, and Mozart competitions.
As one of the most sought-after Bach interpreters, Johannsen performs in the major music centers of the world (including Carnegie Hall in New York) as well as at numerous festivals (Beethovenfest Bonn, Enescu Festival Bucharest). He has performed under legendary conductors such as Nikolaus Harnoncourt and René Jacobs, also with the Staatskapelle Dresden or the Vienna Philharmonic, and is a regular guest of the St. Gallen Bach Foundation and the Nederlandse Bachvereniging.
On stage (for instance, at the Munich Gärtnerplatz or the Volksoper Vienna), the lyrical tenor can be seen in Mozart roles, works of the Baroque, the 20th century, as well as in some operetta roles. He regularly performs art song recitals alongside pianists like Andreas Fröschl and Kristian Bezuidenhout. Approximately 50 CDs, mostly praised by the media and press, document his work.
In 2023/24, Johannsen will perform several times at the Society of Music Friends in Vienna; he will make his US evangelist debut in Los Angeles and will appear again at the Bach à Montréal festival. Recently, his interpretation of Schubert’s Schöner Müllerin was released by hänssler (as a CD in the original hammer piano as well as in the world premiere string quartet version).
