Hausruck Philharmonie
The Hausruck Philharmonic – formerly the Grieskirchen Chamber Orchestra, has been a fixed part of the Upper Austrian cultural landscape for years. It was founded in 1983 by the then head of the music school and later provincial music school director, flutist Helmut Trawöger, who also led the local city music band. His goal was to revive the old tradition of string orchestras in a region predominantly characterized by wind music. Up until the 1960s, music was still played in the smallest communities, and violin playing was a mandatory subject in teacher training colleges until 1965, which naturally significantly influenced the musical tastes and education levels of broad sections of the population. The orchestra in its early days consisted of teachers and music enthusiasts.
Meanwhile, around 70 students (almost all award winners at “prima la musica”) have participated in the orchestra, of which around 20 have chosen music as their profession. One of them – Michael Strasser, viola – became a member of the Vienna Philharmonic in 2003 at the age of 22, and another – Laura Jungwirth, viola section leader of the Bruckner Orchestra Linz.
With MMag. Gunter Waldek, the deputy rector of the Linz Bruckner University, a competent musician took the helm of the orchestra in 1995 and also imparted a solid foundation in the interpretation of contemporary music. Works by Upper Austrian composers Gunter Waldek, Helmut Schmidinger, Alois Schmidauer, and Alois Wimmer (already during the Trawöger era) were successfully premiered alongside others. For the first time, opera productions also enriched the orchestra's program.
From November 2001 to 2019, the former concertmaster Peter Gillmayr served as the musical director. As a violinist, he advocated for the development of string players and the musical and sound advancement of the ensemble, and in his role as director of the Bad Schallerbach Music Summer, he worked to anchor the orchestra sustainably in the regional cultural scene.
Since 2019, Wolfgang Kögler has served as the musical director and has brought some impressive concerts to the stage with the orchestra through his experience and musical understanding. He particularly values collaboration with young soloists, composers, and choirs from the region.
In over 150 concerts both domestically and in neighboring countries at festivals such as the Millstätter Sommer, Musiksommer Bad Schallerbach, Friedrich Gulda Days Schloss Kremsegg, Schärdinger Festwochen, Brucknerbundkonzerte Gmunden, Schlosskonzerte Bernau, Festspiele Hauzenberg/D. and many others, the orchestra has become known far beyond its district borders through demanding interpretations from Baroque to modernity. Renowned (inter)national soloists greatly appreciate the orchestra and are always happy to be guests.
