A Ceremony of Carols
At the grand Advent concert, the St. Florian Boys' Choir, conducted by Markus Stumpner, presents both well-known Alpine Christmas carols and English carols. A special highlight is the choral work "A Ceremony of Carols" by Benjamin Britten, written for boys' choir and harp. As every year, the audience can look forward to a variety of sound combinations: performances by soloists from the ranks of the choir, the boys' choir alone, and the men's choir, which comprises former members of the boys' choir.

St. Florian Boys' Choir
Great Tradition in New Vitality
The success of the St. Florian Boys' Choir rests on the strong foundation of its nearly thousand-year history. Many outstanding musicians have emerged from its ranks since the choir's founding, the most famous of whom is Anton Bruckner, whose 200th birthday will be celebrated in 2024.
Today, the St. Florian Boys' Choir is an internationally active, vibrant choir with a diverse repertoire – with the clear goal of conveying their joy in music to their audience. On their regular concert tours, they bring the great heritage of Austrian musical tradition as well as the latest repertoire ideas to all continents as cultural ambassadors of Europe.
The unique sound of the boys' choir, maintained by only a few institutions worldwide, is still in high demand at significant music festivals and in large opera productions. In recent decades, the choir has traveled to all continents, participated in major music festivals (including the Salzburg Festival, Vienna Festival Weeks, Festival d’Aix en Provence), and collaborated countless times with the most famous orchestras (Vienna Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra,…) and conductors. Franz Welser-Möst, former General Music Director of the Vienna State Opera, is the honorary president of the "Friends of the St. Florian Boys' Choir" association.
Soloists from the St. Florian Boys' Choir regularly sing the roles designated for boys (e.g. the "Three Boys" in Mozart's "The Magic Flute") in major opera houses (including Vienna, Salzburg, Berlin, Verona, Barcelona, Aix en Provence,…).
To expand the repertoire of the BOYS' CHOIR, the MEN'S CHOIR of the St. Florian Boys' Choir was founded in 1989. It mostly consists of former boys who continue their vocal training or have pursued it professionally and are also active in other renowned ensembles.
Soloists from this choir also form small ensembles that perform as part of the boys' choir concerts, sometimes appearing as independent groups.
The rich discography of the St. Florian Boys' Choir includes not only traditional Austrian music, folk and Christmas songs, but also recordings of early music in collaboration with renowned specialist ensembles on historical instruments.
Markus Stumpner was appointed choir director in 2018, and the artistic director has been Franz Farnberger since 1983.

“...this significant choir, distinguished by its unique sound and musicality, stands out from many others, and I hope that this tradition will be carried forward with the same vigor far into the future.” — Franz Welser-Möst
