Johann Strauss – Love, Waltz, Madness
Michael Dangl's new book (publication: February 2025) is the manic, furious – and comedic – reckoning of aging Johann Strauss (II) with himself and his life. Revered by the world as the waltz king, he recounts the ruins of his inner kingdom, from which he has banished love, thereby condemning himself to failure. One more time he travels to St. Petersburg to win back the only love of his life, which he lost thirty years ago out of cowardice.
Olga Smirnitzkaja, the 18-year-old composer at that time, has set poems to music. The flutist Maria Fedotova plays these as well as romances and paraphrases by Johann Strauss.

Michael Dangl
Salzburg State Theater, then at German theaters from Munich to Hamburg. In 1998, Helmuth Lohner engaged him at the Vienna Josefstadt, where he has since played the major roles of classical and modern theater as a protagonist. In 2001, he received the European Cultural Prize, and in 2023 the Raimund Ring and the title of Kammerschauspieler.
Michael Dangl has performed at the Salzburg, Reichenau, and Bregenz festivals. He acts in film and TV, (“Vorstadtweiber”, “Tatort”), writes and narrates literary texts for Ö1, and organizes recitation programs, with a special emphasis on collaborating with musicians. Concerts he has performed include those with Gidon Kremer, Jordi Savall, Rafael Fingerlos, Nicolas Altstaedt, Julia Hagen, with the Kremerata Baltica, the Concentus Musicus Vienna, the Klangforum Vienna, the Camerata Salzburg, the Rhineland Philharmonic, at venues such as: Vienna Musikverein, Vienna Concert Hall, Theater MUTH and Akzent, Cultural Summer Semmering, Chamber Music Festival Lockenhaus, Styriarte Graz, Menuhin Festival Gstaad, Festival Sion, Gmundner Festwochen, Kronberg Academy, among others. In Moscow, he performed in the Great Hall of the Tchaikovsky Conservatory as the “Frog” in “Die Fledermaus” in Russian.
Especially the programs with his wife, flutist Maria Fedotova, connect Dangl’s literary with his musical passion (“Casanova”, “The Nightingale”, “7 Minutes Before Christmas”), as well as his collaboration with Konstantin Wecker: “Every Moment is Eternal” in Vienna, Theater im Park; “The Sound of the Unplayed Notes” in Munich at the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz.
There, since 2018, he has played Henry Higgins in “My Fair Lady” and the “Frog” in Die Fledermaus (co-production with Teatro Maggio Musicale, Florence). Michael Dangl is the author of plays and now six books, his latest novel “Oranges for Dostoevsky” was published in St. Petersburg in Russian translation.
