25 Years of Orchestra Ensemble Sonare
The renowned Upper Austrian Orchestra Ensemble Sonare Linz was founded here in Bad Schallerbach and has accompanied festivals in Bad Hall, Bad Leonfelden, Schloss Wildberg, Musica Sacra Linz, and many more over the years. It will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2025.
Concertmaster Peter Gillmayr, who will conduct this evening, has been able to enlist his friend Beni Schmid, THE all-rounder on the violin, as a soloist. The program includes Franz Schubert's Rondo in A Major for solo violin and strings, his Symphony in B Minor (“The Unfinished”), as well as his 4th Symphony (“The Tragic”).
Benjamin Schmid
Since his debut at the Salzburg Festival as solo partner of Sir Yehudi Menuhin in 1986, Benjamin Schmid has developed through his worldwide, consistently intense concert activity in about 3000 live concerts into one of the most important violinists of our time.
Winning the Carl-Flesch Competition in 1992 in London, where he was also awarded the Mozart, Beethoven, and Audience Prizes, brought international breakthrough for the violinist Benjamin Schmid from Vienna, along with other competition prizes.
Since then, he has performed on the most important stages of the world with renowned orchestras such as the Vienna Philharmonic, the Philharmonia Orchestra London, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, the Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, and the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra.
His brilliant technique, clarity and passion of expression, his soloistic charisma, the extraordinary range of his repertoire, and furthermore his improvisational skills in jazz make him a violinist of unique profile.
A continuously awarded focus of his repertoire is the violin works of W. A. Mozart.
In 2023, Benjamin Schmid released Mozart's Violin Concertos Nos. 3-5 on CD; together with his partner orchestra Musica Vitae Sweden, he also released 3 jazz violin concertos by composers Sabina Hank, Herbert Berger, and Friedrich Gulda.
Of the over 60 CDs by Benjamin Schmid, Korngold's Violin Concerto with the Vienna Philharmonic under Seiji Ozawa has been listed as one of the "Ten Best Live CDs Ever Recorded" (Fono Forum), others have been awarded the Opus Klassik Prize (multiple times), the German Record Prize (as the only violinist in the categories Classical and Jazz), the Echo Klassik Prize, Grammophone Editor’s Choice, or the Strad Selection.
Several globally broadcast documentaries about Benjamin Schmid complete the extraordinary status of the violinist.
Benjamin Schmid is portrayed as one of the most important violinists in the book "The Great Violinists of the 20th Century" by Jean-Michel Molkou (Publishing House Buchet-Chastel, 2014).
He performs on the "ex Viotti 1718" Stradivarius violin, provided to him by the Austrian National Bank, as well as on a modern violin from 2015 by Wiltrud Fauler.
