25 Years of the Orchester Ensemble Sonare
The renowned Upper Austrian Orchester Ensemble Sonare Linz was founded here in Bad Schallerbach and has been accompanying festivals in Bad Hall, Bad Leonfelden, Schloss Wildberg, Musica Sacra Linz, and many more for years. It will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2025.
Concertmaster Peter Gillmayr, who will conduct this evening, has managed to win his friend Beni Schmid, THE all-rounder on the violin, as a soloist. The program features Franz Schubert's Rondo in A major for solo violin and strings, his Symphony in B minor ("The Unfinished"), and his 4th Symphony ("The Tragic").
Benjamin Schmid
Since his debut at the Salzburg Festival as a solo partner of Sir Yehudi Menuhin in 1986, Benjamin Schmid has developed into one of the most important violinists of our time through his worldwide, consistently intensive concert activities with around 3000 live concerts.
Winning the Carl-Flesch Competition in 1992 in London, where he also received the Mozart, Beethoven, and Audience Prizes, led to his international breakthrough, in addition to other competition prizes, for the violinist Benjamin Schmid from Vienna.
Since then, he has performed on the world's most important stages with renowned orchestras such as the Vienna Philharmonic, the Philharmonia Orchestra London, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, the Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, and the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra.
His brilliant technique, clarity and passion of expression, his solo charisma, the extraordinary range of his repertoire, and furthermore, his improvisational abilities in jazz make him a violinist of unique profile.
A continuously awarded focus of his repertoire is the violin works of W. A. Mozart.
In 2023, Benjamin Schmid will release Mozart's Violin Concertos Nos. 3-5 on CD; and also, in partnership with the Musica Vitae Orchestra from Sweden, 3 jazz violin concertos by composers Sabina Hank, Herbert Berger, and Friedrich Gulda.
Of the over 60 CDs by Benjamin Schmid, Korngold's Violin Concerto with the Vienna Philharmonic under Seiji Ozawa was listed as one of the "Ten Best Live CDs Ever Recorded" (Fono Forum), and others have received the Opus Klassik Award (multiple times), the German Record Prize (as the only violinist in the categories of Classical and Jazz), the Echo Klassik Prize, Gramophone Editor’s Choice, or the Strad Selection.
Several documentaries aired worldwide about Benjamin Schmid complete the extraordinary stature of the violinist.
Benjamin Schmid is portrayed as one of the most important violinists in the book "The Great Violinists of the 20th Century" by Jean-Michel Molkou (Buchet-Chastel Publishing, 2014).
He performs on the "ex Viotti 1718" Stradivarius violin, which is provided to him by the Austrian National Bank, as well as on a modern violin from 2015 by Wiltrud Fauler.
