Robert Mihlan – Paintings and Drawings

The 2026 “Summer Art at the Steinhaus” exhibition is dedicated to the extensive body of work by painter and draftsman Robert Mihlan. Robert Mihlan, who studied sculpture in Linz, has been engaged in painting and drawing as artistic mediums since his student days; over time, these have become his most important forms of artistic expression. The techniques he uses include painting with watercolors and ink, as well as drawing with charcoal, pastels, various pencils, and markers.

His exploration of the depiction of the natural contexts that surround us and are shaped by human intervention
constitutes a central theme of his paintings. Robert Mihlans’ pictorial spaces aim to transport us to “non-real” places where the unique nature of the depicted natural phenomena speaks to us and invites us to explore them, as it were, as temporary refuges.

In other words, Robert Mihlan’s paintings are inventions that nonetheless incorporate essential aspects of a natural environment, even though they are created through the artificial means of painting and drawing—color, light and dark, and line. “Through the astonishing possibility of creating places in landscape paintings, we can pursue our desire to overcome our alienation from nature, or become aware of the emotions stirred within us when we experience a landscape in a painting.”

The exhibition will be accompanied musically by guitarist Oliver Jungbauer.
