The brass bands of New Orleans emerged in the late 19th century and invariably consisted of trumpets, trombones, clarinets, saxophones, sousaphones and percussion. This band played a unique mix of European military music and African folk music.
In addition to traditional songs such as "When The Saints Go Marching In", funk and hip-hop elements are mixed in with the music.
One group of words that is often heard in connection with New Orleans brass bands is the "second line". This comes from parades and jazz funerals where the first line consists of members of a club (and is a rather serious affair) and a (rather fun) second line with a lively style of music and dance. The predominantly African-American neighbourhood of Tremé in New Orleans identifies strongly with the second line tradition. And the Treme Song is a must at every concert of this band.
