Mendelssohn's 3rd Symphony, the "Scottish", and Bruckner's 'First' in the "Viennese version" guarantee great symphonic music.

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy was a kind of contemporary classicist in the first decades of Anton Bruckner's career and as such had a lasting influence on the orchestral works from his student days, in which echoes of the theme and orchestration of the Hebrides Overture can be found. By contrast, Bruckner was at least familiar with the Symphony No. 3 in A minor, which became popular under the nickname "Scottish", from the concert hall. His own, highly individual symphonic style was first documented by Bruckner's Symphony No. 1 in C minor, premièred in Linz in 1868, with which the composer, already over 40 years old, set off into new worlds and confidently entered the musical field that he declared to be the most important for him: that of symphonic music. When he subjected the work to a fundamental revision from 1890 onwards, resulting in its  "Vienna version" which the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra premiered on 13 December 1891, he affectionately and jokingly called it his  "cheeky little fellow".
