Assumption of Mary - Patrocinium

The patronal feast is probably one of the most beautiful and colorful church festivals in Spital / Pyhrn.

Carl Maria von Weber's "Missa Sancta No. 2, op. 76" was composed between 1818 and 1819. The nickname "Jubilee Mass" comes from the fact that it was premiered on the occasion of the 50th wedding anniversary of the King and Queen of Saxony. The royal couple and the composer were on friendly terms; they had also taken on the godparenthood of Weber's daughter, who was born in 1818. As with all his scores, Weber (1786-1826) wrote "soli deo gloria" at the end of the jubilee mass.
This impressive music can be heard in Spital am Pyhrn this year on the Feast of the Assumption. The blessing of herbs is an integral part of this festive service every year. It is said that the medicinal herbs have a special effect between the Assumption of Mary on August 15 and the commemoration of the Sorrows of Mary on September 15.
