Customs are something that is alive and constantly evolving.
Perchten are scary female figures that appear in Alpine customs especially in December and January. They are similar to the Krampus, who appears as an accompaniment to St Nicholas. Their name is presumably derived from the legendary figure of the Perchta . Another naming theory assumes that the term derives from Epiphany, the feast of the Epiphany on 6 January. The Perchten's most important utensil is the bell, which is used to drive out winter. The visit of Perchten is popularly held up as a lucky omen. The extent to which the Perchten procession really goes back to pagan customs is disputed.
