In 1918, the Danube Monarchy, for which the foundation stone was once laid in the parish church with the "Imperial Wedding" of Austria with Bohemia and Hungary, collapsed. The (temporary) end of Austria was also sealed in the Hotel Weinzinger in 1938 with the "Anschluss". The Austrian Civil War began at the Hotel Schiff in 1934 and between 1945 and 1955 the border between the Soviet and US zones ran right through the centre of Linz.
