Traditional cot exhibition

Drawing from the extensive collections of OÖ Landes-Kultur GmbH, the Castle Museum is able to display approximately 70 different nativity scenes, as well as scenes and depictions related to the Christmas season.

Highlights include the Garsten Abbey Nativity Scene, featuring nearly life-size figures dating from around 1730, as well as a mechanical nativity scene from the workshop of Johann Georg Schwanthaler.

In addition, the variety of ways to depict the Christmas story with freely movable figures from all regions of Upper Austria is truly captivating. Particularly impressive are the landscape nativity scenes from the Salzkammergut, comprising several hundred figures, such as the “Golden Sams Nativity Scene” from Ischl (1780–1850) and the Bruckschlögl Nativity Scene from the period 1850–1950, with its rich genre scenes.

Box nativity scenes, elaborately dressed figures from the Innviertel region, “Loammandln,” and much more round out the exhibition on Upper Austrian nativity scene art.
