For thousands of years, the Song of the Nibelungs has told the story of male heroes—of royal intrigues, loyalty, conflicts, and rebellion. EPOS—The Rock Opera is the first to portray the legend from a female perspective: from the viewpoint of those women whose love, freedom, and future become the currency of power. Composer and lyricist Zoë Straub strips the thousand-year-old heroic epic of the patina and pathos of the ages and cloaks it in a rousing musical mantle.
It begins with a great passion—and ends in ruin: The love between Kriemhild and the dragon-slayer Siegfried leads to deception and betrayal. Kriemhild’s world shatters, and Brünhild, too, loses her power. Yet both women refuse to become pawns in a tragic heroic saga written by men: While Brünhild realizes that her fate is rooted in betrayal and deception, Kriemhild, after Siegfried’s death, sets out on a path of vengeance. Former rivals become allies who rebel against an order that has pitted them against one another—determined to rewrite their destinies.
