27th Schafberg Run— A Fun Run on the Scenic Mountain!

The Classic Schafberg Run

In 1983, as part of the Schafbergbahn’s 90th-anniversary celebration, Franz Zimmermann came up with the idea of organizing the run as a sporting event open to all runners. Cardboard race numbers were quickly put together, and the event was ready to go. The field of runners was still very small back then; times were measured by hand, and the results list fit on a single A4 sheet of paper.
Since then, the race has taken place annually in the spring. Only once, due to a sudden onset of winter, was the course shortened to end at the Schafbergalm.

The Schafberg Trail

Runners know it well: the only thing you give up is a letter. And so, after three COVID-related cancellations of the Schafberg Run, the president of the St. Wolfgang Running Club, Werner Haas, came up with the idea of organizing a run up the Schafberg in the summer after all. A few like-minded people were quickly on board, and planning could begin. However, since the rail line cannot be used during peak season, the standard trail up the Schafberg serves as an alternative. Only a short stretch of paved road needs to be navigated. Two-thirds of the route runs on forest trails through a beautiful mixed forest, while the final third leads across the Schafbergalm to the summit, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains and lakes. Some runners even whisper that this route is actually more scenic than the one along the railway line.

Route Description

The route follows asphalt for the first 500 meters and then turns onto a beautiful forest trail through the mixed forest up to the Schafbergalm. From the Schafbergalm, a magnificent panorama of the picturesque Salzkammergut unfolds. Start at the Schafbergbahn station in St. Wolfgang and follow Schafbergstraße. Continue uphill along the Müllnerbühel and the forest road. After about 1.3 kilometers, turn left onto Hiking Trail 24 and head briefly downhill across the Dittelbach. Head uphill again, cross the Schafbergbahn tracks, and pass the Aschinger snack bar on the left. Hiking Trail 23 begins immediately after the snack bar. This trail leads all the way to the Schafbergalm and continues over the overpass to the Schafberg. The trail ends at the Schafberg station.

You’ll need to cross the Schafbergbahn twice along the route. Marshals will be on site. If you encounter the Schafbergbahn, it has the right of way.

Leaving the marked hiking trails is strictly prohibited and will result in immediate disqualification.

In the alpine pasture area, special care must be taken around grazing livestock (maintain a safe distance). Dogs are not permitted for safety reasons!

Route length: 7.6 kilometers, 1,221 meters of elevation gain
The race starts at 3:00 p.m. at the SchafbergBahn valley station and finishes in St. Gilgen.
