On May 6, 1945, the Ebensee concentration camp was liberated by the 3rd Cavalry of the US Army. Around 15,000 people from numerous European countries regained their freedom and human dignity. The US troops were too late for around 8,500 men, who lost their lives in the "cement labor camp".
The liberation is commemorated every year as part of the international memorial service.
