SPIRITUAL HIKING ON THE DONAUSTEIG:

Mauthausen lies on the Jakobsweg Upper Austria east-west – north route.

“Blessed are those who set out to discover the world with their feet”

St. Hedwig (mystic), she was barefoot on pilgrimage from northern Germany to Rome. Even today, the Hedwig spring in Mauthausen remembers her.

When pilgrimaging, I can get ground under my feet again, re-ground myself and thus gain support and stability. My feet have contact with the ground and carry me through life, every step – so that something keeps going.

In walking, the pilgrim structure is already part of every step:
Setting out – leaving the old – as one foot lifts off the ground and begins a new step.

Being on the way – in the foot’s rolling motion.

Arriving – when the whole foot has ground contact.

  • Consciously touching the ground with the feet – heel-ball-toe.

  • Feeling how the ground feels under my feet.

  • Feeling how the feet feel on this ground.

  • Foot care, occasionally going barefoot and feeling the soft meadow ground.

  • Massaging the feet.

Directions:
From the starting point in Mauthausen (Pragstein Castle) we head north towards the marketplace. We turn left and ascend to the parish church. Passing the church, we keep left (Kirchenberg, then “Am Brunnenberg” and Brunngraben). There we meet the Donausteig and follow it against the direction of the signposting. At a forest section, we leave the Donausteig again and return to Mauthausen along the street. We pass a cemetery and reach the first settlement before descending to Mauthausen. At the parish church, we keep left and go down Kirchenberg. We maintain the direction and turn right at Heinrich Churchweg to return to the starting point.Tip:
120-year-old plane trees under monument protection by the market fountain in the center of Mauthausen. Pragstein Castle with local history and pharmacy museum. Monument-protected townhouses on Leopold Heindl Quay. Pillory and Romanesque charnel house. Gothic parish church of St. Nicholas.Equipment:
