Hiking trail in Kaltenberg in the Mühlviertel region

The wild and romantic valley of the Höllenbach stream and the rugged Bärenlucke: this trail offers impressive nature. After your start in Kaltenberg, the trail leads you downhill through the forest to the Bärenlucke. After a steep ascent along the stream, you come to the "Kuchlstein", where a bench invites you to take a break. A short distance further up the stream, you can take a detour to a bridge and enjoy another view of the wildly rugged "Bärenlucke". You return to Kaltenberg along a steep hiking trail.

The trail
The Bärenluckenweg is a circular hiking trail. With a length of 4.6 km and an altitude difference of around 160 metres, it is suitable for a leisurely hike.
Important information: Good footwear is highly recommended. The trail includes some wet spots.

Refreshments along the way
At the starting point in Kaltenberg, the traditional Kaltenbergerhof inn with its traditional cuisine invites you to stop for a bite to eat. The cosy parlour or the guest garden will provide for your physical well-being.
Close to the village, around 900 m from the town centre, you will find the Langoth snack station, which will spoil you with a hearty snack, hearty meals and homemade pastries.

Sights and highlights along the way
  • St Mary's pilgrimage church in Kaltenberg
  • Original chapel
  • Bärenlucke
  • Kuchlstein: The overhanging stone, which forms a sheltered cave, has always been a shelter for lumberjacks. During the turmoil of the Second World War, the Kuchlstein was used as a hiding place from the Russian soldiers. As the women were hidden for long periods of time, they also cooked there, which is how the stone got its name.
