Spital am Pyhrn

Spital am Pyhrn, Oberösterreich, Österreich
Spital am Pyhrn lies between the Warscheneck massif and the Haller Mauern at the foot of the Pyhrn Pass on the border with Styria. The southernmost municipality in the Pyhrn-Priel holiday region has a lot to offer in both summer and winter and, with the fastest funicular railway in Europe, has a trump card up its sleeve at any time of year.

Spital am Pyhrn, the southernmost municipality in the Pyhrn-Priel holiday region, has a lot to offer in both summer and winter and, with the fastest funicular railway in Europe, has a trump card up its sleeve at any time of year.

Wurzeralm - Winterwelt & Wanderalm

With the Skigebiet Wurzeralm, Spital am Pyhrn not only has the fastest funicular railway in Europe, but also a paradise for skiing and hiking fans of all abilities. Nestled between the Stubwies, Rote Wand and Warscheneck peaks, there are a good 20 kilometres of pistes for all ability levels to discover in winter. 8 lifts between 810 m and 1,870 m above sea level, rustic huts, a Sunny Kids Park for the ski stars of tomorrow and two valley runs make skiers' hearts beat faster. In summer, the "2 million years in 2 hours" circular hiking trail, which is also accessible with a pushchair, starts at the mountain station. The themed trail deals with the geological and ecological features of the Wurzeralm and leads around the highest high and low moor in the Northern Limestone Alps.
A detour to Lake Brunnsteiner See is also worthwhile.
Mountain enthusiasts are best advised to take the Frauenkarbahn cable car up to 1,800 metres above sea level to climb the surrounding peaks of the Warscheneck massif.

Alms & water gorges in Spital am Pyhrn

The wild and romantic "Dr. Vogelgesang-Klamm" in Spital am Pyhrn is the longest accessible rock gorge in Upper Austria and a great excursion tip for the whole family. Around 500 steps set into the rock lead through the fascinating natural spectacle of the cascading water. Once at the top, a paradise of hiking trails awaits hikers. Spital am Pyhrn is also known for its numerous hiking trails and rustic, cosy huts. At the Gowilalm in Oberweng, for example, the most beautiful alpine balcony in Upper Austria, you can not only marvel at the breathtaking mountain panorama, but also, among other things, climb up the mountain path built by the local extreme mountaineer Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner, who has been crowned the world's best Kaiserschmarrn pancake.

From "blacksmithing" to the "Cathedral on the Pyhrn"

Culture enthusiasts are in the right place in Spital am Pyhrn in the truest sense of the word, as the Hungarians knew how to store the entire gold treasure of their national bank - 33,000 kg - here at the end of the Second World War. Above all, the baroque abbey church - the "Dom am Pyhrn" - characterises the cultural image of the municipality of Spital am Pyhrn. But also the two-storey, late Gothic rock church of St Leonhard, the Huf- und Hackenschmiede Lindermayr as a show forge, offer an extensive cultural programme.

"Between heaven and earth - Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner and the world of the 8000m peaks"

How do extreme mountaineers think and feel? What does it take to climb the highest peaks? What do the 8,000 metre peaks look like from above? The museum "Between Heaven and Earth - Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner and the World of the 8000ers" tells the story of alpinism in an impressive way, explains the physical and psychological conditions for extreme mountaineering and the special features and phases of a high alpine expedition. In the multimedia film room, you can experience extreme weather conditions - from squalls to life-threatening avalanches. A 9 metre high climbing tower awaits in front of the museum. The patron of the exhibition is Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner. Born in Spital, she is the first woman to have climbed all 14 of the world's eight-thousanders without supplemental oxygen.

Leisure time with pleasure

With the Running & Walking Arena, which offers four individual running routes, the family-friendly panoramic indoor pool, tennis courts and a high ropes course, Spital am Pyhrn has even more active fun on the programme. Numerous cross-country ski trails - whether in the valley or on one of the panoramic high-altitude trails, trendy snowshoe hikes or hearty ice stock games are on the programme away from the piste.
