Mauerkirchen was first mentioned in documents in 1250. In 1276 Duke Stephen the Elder of Bavaria granted the town trading rights and, especially important, the right to hold a weekly market.
After World War II Mauerkirchen attracted new settlers from the East. Today the town has a population of 2300 inhabitants.
Mauerkirchen boasts a charming town square with an old fountain and friendly inns and restaurants. Other worthwhile attractions include the beautiful Emperor Josef II Park, a parish church which was remodeled in neo-gothic style after a big fire in 1865, and Hl. Geistkirche church with its lavish stucco decorations.
In the summer the town’s swimming pools are a great place to relax and have fun.
