Weltlängste Burg

Burghausen, Bayern, Deutschland

The Salzach pearl Burghausen attracts visitors with the world's longest castle at over one kilometre in length (1,051m) The walls, battlements and towers seem to stretch endlessly over a narrow mountain tongue, nestled between the natural bathing lake Wöhrsee and the idyllic Salzach, the river that borders Austria. Burghausen Castle bears witness to over a thousand years of history and is the centrepiece of a visit to Burghausen. The viewing platform on the roof of the main castle offers a unique panoramic view. Three outstanding museums enrich the castle grounds and the public castle tours bring the life of the wealthy Lower Bavarian dukes to life.
The castle grounds are open all year round and admission is free.

The first expansion of the castle began in the 11th century, followed by its further development as the seat of the Counts of Burghausen in the 12th century. The fortress received its present form in the 15th century under the wealthy Lower Bavarian dukes, in particular Duke Henry XIII and Duke George the Rich.

The castle was a residence, fortress, administrative center and home to princely families for centuries. One of the most famous residents is Duchess Hedwig. Her marriage to Duke George the Rich in 1475 went down in the history books as the "Landshut Wedding". The Duchess lived in Burghausen with her own court, sumptuous living quarters and regular receptions. The Hedwig Chapel still commemorates the duchess today.

Those who want to follow in the footsteps of the princely inhabitants of the castle can delve deeper into the Middle Ages on exciting castle tours, family and children's tours. A tricky scavenger hunt or the GPS crime tour of the castle will awaken even more joy of discovery. In the town museum, interactive hands-on stations bring the past to life, while the State Castle Museum displays art treasures from the late Middle Ages. This brings history to life and whets the appetite for more: a new journey through the centuries begins behind every castle wall - extra long and extra exciting!
