Explore at your own pace

The permanent exhibition covering almost a millennium of monastery history with the valuable Romanesque frescoes from the 11th century can be visited without a guide. This exhibition was conceived in 2006 on the occasion of the 950th anniversary of the Benedictine monastery in Lambach, entitled “In the river – on the river”. It involves visitors in the flow of time, leads through representative rooms and shows cultural and historical highlights from monastery life, architecture, fine arts, literature and music.

From Easter 2023, the “famous guests” of the monastery will be presented in the museum and a separate room will be dedicated to them. The well-known copper engravings by P. Koloman Fellner can also be viewed.

Visit the old frescoes again

For 50 years, the thousand-year-old frescoes from the time of the monastery's Romanesque church have been open to the public as part of a guided tour. According to Abbot Maximilian Neulinger, there was always a desire on the part of visitors to be able to view the frescoes longer without the time pressure of a guided tour.

This gave rise to the idea of giving people interested in art access to the frescoes all day: since the summer of 2022, visitors have been able to buy a ticket for €6.00 at the newly installed access terminal and visit the exhibition rooms. This offer was gladly accepted by our visitors, says Abt Neulinger, and will therefore be continued this year. Of course, the guided tours through the monastery with its many sights will continue to take place unchanged.

Guided tours for groups are carried out all year round by prior arrangement. Anyone who would like to find out why the world-famous frescoes were lost for centuries and were only rediscovered by chance is cordially invited to take part in a guided tour! Of course, the guided tours through the monastery with its many sights will continue to take place unchanged.

Guided tours of the abbey for individuals without prior reservation will again take place from April 9, 2023 (Easter Sunday) until the end of October every Wed - Sun at 2 p.m.

The tickets can be purchased at the reception or outside the opening hours from the ticket machine (9 a.m. - 5 p.m.). To do this, please follow the orange markings in the Stiftshof and the signs.
