Parish Church Rottenbach

Rottenbach, Oberösterreich, Österreich
  • All weather

Already at the time of the noble family of Rottenbach - still in the 11th century or at the beginning of the 12th century - a first chapel made of wood was built on the area of the later parish church with a cemetery.

The parish church is dedicated to St. Peter. It is a beautiful, late Gothic building with a ribbed vault. The first settlers and builders of the first church in the village are unknown, but it can be assumed that it was founded in Passau, since the fiefdom of the church belonged to Passau and the cathedral chapter had always had possessions in the village.

During the interior renovation in 1956, the symbols of the four evangelists and the sweat cloth of Veronica were uncovered, as well as frescoes dating back to 1524. Also leaf tendril ornaments in the choir vault and a fresco of St. George on the north side came to light. To create a counterpart, the image of St. Christopher was repainted.
