Heiligen-Geist-Gasse

Freistadt, Oberösterreich, Österreich
  • All weather

Heiligen-Geist-Gasse takes its name from the small chapel, which today can only be recognised by the striking door in an eye-catching donkey-back portal. It was built as a chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary, but was renamed the Chapel of the Holy Spirit during the Reformation, as the Protestants did not worship the Virgin Mary.
There is a public fountain on the right-hand side. It was one of a total of five that existed in the town at the time. The fountains were essential for the life of the citizens, and the town's first water pipe was not built until 1890. Until then, water was collected in buckets.
At the corner of Waaggasse, you can clearly see one of the many stones placed over the corner. Horse-drawn carts were not as easy to steer as cars are today. In order to prevent the protruding wheel hub from damaging the house wall, such wheel deflector stones were placed at critical points such as corners or gateways.
You can find out where in the city you could have a broken cartwheel repaired at the next stop on our tour.
