Toifiskira

About 500 metres north of the Steinmühle mill in the Gusental valley is a high rock, the so-called Toifiskira (Devil's Church). The Linz-Budweis horse-drawn railway, which was abandoned in 1872, lies at the foot of the rock.

Around 1830, the route was blasted out of the rock. The devil, who sat at the top of the rock, was not happy with the construction and blasting noise. He also feared for his peace and quiet in the future. So every night, when the track was cleared again, he threw huge quantities of stones onto the railway line. But when he saw that the hard-working labourers were clearing away the stones every day, he moved to a quieter area in a rage. An imprint of his buttocks and paws at the top of the rock still bears witness to his favourite place.
