Warscheneck-Süd - Wurzeralm

Spital am Pyhrn, Oberösterreich, Österreich
  • Suitable for groups

This nature reserve encompasses the southern slopes of the Warscheneck mountain range. At its foot lies the Teichlboden. The work of nature can be seen here in a particularly impressive way: Underground cavities collapsed and formed funnel-shaped depressions. At the same time, the mountains repeatedly deposited rock material here.

This is why this section of the valley is also a Natura 2000 site and a bird sanctuary. Otters hunt here and the yellow-bellied toad can also be found along the Kleine Gusen. Above all, however, this habitat is home to a whole range of bird species that have become rare. The hazel grouse has found a valuable habitat here, as have the black woodpecker and the eagle owl. The route of the Linz-Budweis horse-drawn railway once ran through the Gusen Valley, which is why it is accessible via a section of the horse-drawn railway hiking trail.
