Konradkirche

Oberwang bei Mondsee, Oberösterreich, Österreich
The Konradkirche is dedicated to St Martin, but is also known as Konradkirche or St Konrad. The church was first mentioned in a document in 1407, making it one of the oldest churches in the country. Many legends surround the death of Abbot Konrad. His body is said to have remained intact when the murderers tried to burn him, as is the death board that can be seen in the church. Under Abbot Simon Reuchlin, the Gothic church, which still exists today, was built in the 15th century.4) The pilgrimage to St Konrad was so popular at the time that a portable altar was initially approved for the church so that the service could be held outdoors in the event of a large number of pilgrims. Various references indicate that the Konrad church was at times more central to the religious life of Oberwang than the parish church dedicated to St. Kilian, probably because of the pilgrimage. The high altar from around 1600 is attributed to Hans Waldburger and comes from the former Bürgerspitalskirche in Mondsee.5)
The artist Professor Lydia Roppolt, who died in 1995 and had her home and workshop near the church and is buried in the Konradkirche, created the stained glass windows and numerous other works of art for the church.6) Her works of sacred art are known far beyond the borders of the parish and the country. They give the viewer a sense of calm and serenity and inspire meditative prayer.
Abbot Konrad is highly revered in the region. His remains were first honoured at the Wolfgang altar in 1682, and since 1732 they have had a worthy place at the high altar in the Mondsee basilica above the tabernacle.
St Konrad's Church is located on the additional route of the Via Nova. However, it is also the destination of pilgrimages and prayer walks. A Way of the Cross connects the church with the traditional site of the abbot's murder, the Konradbrunn (Konradbrunn Chapel).
