Alpakapoint Pointner - learning together with animals and promoting social skills
Renate Pointner, a specialist in animal-assisted intervention with many years of experience in dealing with coma and stroke patients, and her husband Gottfried, a farmer and alpaca breeder, run a very special farm on the European Green Belt. A total of five ÖKL-certified alpacas, as well as rabbits and goats, are currently being used to offer children new experiences and bring them closer to nature and its inhabitants in a playful way. Learning with animals is much more fun for children with developmental delays, for restless or hyperactive children who calm down with alpacas, which are in themselves escape animals. Animals are used as co-trainers for children and adults to improve gross and fine motor skills, concentration and stamina. They also work together to increase the self-esteem of children with speech problems by familiarising them with the animals, doing exercises together and going for walks in the open countryside. The Pointners' farm, as a place that promotes all the senses to a high degree, is also a day centre for people in need of care, primarily to relieve the burden on their relatives.
