On the site of the Hotel Waldheimat, idyllically situated on the edge of the forest, there was originally a railway station for the Linz-Budweis horse-drawn railway. The station building in Oberndorf was built between 1831 and 1832. The station building at that time was 75.86 metres long. Oberndorf was a popular destination for excursions. From 1834, there was already a scheduled excursion service between Urfahr and Oberndorf during the warm season.
In 1918, the former station building was bought by the Diakoniewerk and used as a hostel for girls and later as a housekeeping school and laundry. The Hotel Waldheimat was added to the historic building and opened in 1975. Today, the comfortable hotel with a family atmosphere offers 30 cosy rooms with TV and WLAN as well as various seminar rooms. Many guests visit the Hotel Waldheimat to enjoy a holiday in the beautiful Mühlviertel region with its hilly landscapes, castles and fortresses - Gallneukirchen is the starting point for a variety of excursions and hikes. The famous horse-drawn railway hiking trail leads right past the hotel.
